Sugar estate inventory recovery, Grenada
Recovery and editorial reading of a single sugar estate inventory series for a researcher who could not read the hand of the later years.
The early years of the series were readable. The later years had been written by a clerk whose hand became progressively harder to read as the ledger went on, which I think says more about the clerk's working conditions than about anyone's literacy.
I read the difficult years out loud with the researcher over a long series of evening calls. We did not pretend to be certain of words we were not certain of. The transcription marks every uncertain reading as uncertain.
The researcher's chapter from this work has since been published. The transcription itself remains a working document.
